Well Child Exams Q & A

What is involved in a well-child exam?

What happens during a child exam depends on your child’s age and the nature of the visit. In general, these annual physicals are a time for Dr. Kayass to review any health changes or symptoms your child is having.

A well-child exam is also a time to:

  • Evaluate your child’s growth
  • Monitor your child’s physical and emotional development
  • Screen for specific health problems
  • Administer vaccines

Regular child exams also allow Dr. Kayass to establish a relationship with your child. He’ll talk to them and you, the parent, about safety, nutrition, and exercise habits. He also checks in with teens to learn more about their mood and psychiatric health as well.

What happens during a child exam?

The Tots N Teens Pediatrics staff begin a child exam by updating health information and family history. They measure your child’s weight and height, blood pressure, and heart rate.

The staff also talks to you about your child’s health habits, school performance, and development. Teens may fill out questionnaires to evaluate any behavioral health risks. This is a good time to bring up any concerns you have about your child’s physical or emotional health.

Dr. Kayass performs a comprehensive physical examination and orders any screening tests, such as blood work, that he thinks might be helpful.

If your child is due for any standard vaccines, like measles, human papillomavirus, or chickenpox, the staff ensures they’re current and fully protected from disease.

Are child exams really necessary?

A child exam is like an insurance policy. It helps you feel confident that your child is getting all they need to thrive physically and socially.

These child exams are also when Dr. Kayass can develop a relationship with your child. That way, visits to the pediatrician become a less stressful event for your little one.

Child exams keep your child’s information and health history up to date for sports teams and school physicals. The standard screenings at these exams can also pick up any health changes that require intervention before they escalate into serious problems.

Children and teens with specific health problems, like diabetes or asthma, require child exams to ensure their treatment plans are working and not suffering complications.
