Sleep Disorders Q & A

What sleep disorders affect children?

Children don’t always “sleep like a baby.” As many as 20%-30% of children experience sleep problems at some point in their development. Some of the most common sleep disturbances in children include:

  • Insufficient sleep
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Nighttime arousal
  • Sleep apnea
  • Narcolepsy
  • Sleepwalking

If you’re concerned about your child’s sleep habits, make an appointment at Tots N Teens Pediatrics.

What are the symptoms of sleep disorders?

Your child may have a sleep disorder if they have any of the following:

  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Snoring
  • Breathing pauses during sleep
  • Trouble staying awake during the day
  • Decrease in daytime performance
  • Sleepwalking or nightmares
  • Teeth grinding
  • Bed wetting
  • Trouble waking up in the morning

Children who also get up several times during the night may also have a sleep disorder.

What effects do sleep disorders have on children?

Without quality sleep, children can suffer many negative side effects. These include moodiness and irritability. They may have trouble focusing or staying awake in school. Sometimes, behavioral and learning problems result, too.

Sleep disorders in children can be incredibly frustrating to parents. Your child’s poor sleep often translates into poor sleep for you. Plus, it can be stressful to know your child is struggling with the effects in their daily life.
